Android TV is a popular platform for streaming media and enjoying your favorite TV shows, movies, and games on a big screen. It's a powerful operating system, but it can slow down over time due to many factors. How to speed up slow Android TV?

How to speed up slow Android TV?

Most Android TVs are slow including mine 😭. They lack in giving a smooth performance and UI experience. Even the flagship TVs have problems like app lag and optimization issues. But here's how I fixed them. ✅

How to speed up slow Android TV?

If you are experiencing lag and slow performance on your Android TV, there are several steps you can take to speed it up and improve your viewing experience. In this article, we will share some tips and tricks to help you optimize and speed up your Android TV and enjoy smoother and faster app browsing and video playback :

1. Use developer options to speed up Android TV:

You can enable developer options to make some adjustments in your tv settings to speed it up. There are four main adjustments to make in the developer option. First, let's turn on the developer option :

  • Go to settings > Device preferences > About
  • Scroll down and tap the build number multiple times to unlock the developer options.
  • After that, it will say "You are now a developer."

The next step is to go to the developer options and enable it. Inside the developer option there are four settings we can customize to speed up the performance of our Android TV:

In the developer option scroll down and you will find three options namely -

  • Window animation scale
  • Transition animation scale
  • Animator duration scale

Set all of them to 0.5X or you can also turn them off. My personal choice is 0.5X because without animation the UI looks weird. You can try both and choose accordingly. Reducing the animation does speed up the performance slightly.

This setting will limit the number of apps that can run in the background simultaneously. I suggest you set it to 2. This will only keep 2 recent apps running in the background. That means only 2 apps will consume CPU, GPU, and RAM. Limiting the background process keeps the RAM free so that the device can run smoothly. Too many apps running in the background will take up all the RAM available and make the device less responsive.

Force GPU rendering is forcing the GPU to increase the 2D rendering. Enable this option to speed up things a little.

Usage and diagnostics automatically send crash and error reports to Google. So that this information can be used to fix bugs and improve the user's experience. These functions keep running in the background to monitor errors and send data. These are additional loads on the device and may impact the device's performance.

That is why turning this option off will decrease the RAM, CPU, and GPU usage and make the TV more responsive.

After changing all these four settings you will notice that the TV is now more responsive, scrolling is faster and app opening is quicker.

2. Disable recommendations :

The new home screen recommendations are unnecessary and annoying for some users and they also impact the performance of the TV slightly. To get rid of these home screen recommendations follow these steps :

  • If you use a Google TV dongle or Google TV, there should be an option called "Apps only" mode. Enable this mode and this will remove all the recommendations.
  • To find this go to - Settings > Accounts and log in > Select Account > Apps only mode.

  • For other Android TV users :
  1. Go to settings > Apps
  2. Go to system apps
  3. Look for "Android TV Home" and click on it.
  4. Click on "Uninstall updates"

After uninstalling the updates your Android TV UI will go back to the older version where there are no Home screen recommendations.

Note: Make sure to turn off the auto updates app in Playstore, so that Google does not automatically update the "Android TV Home" app. To turn off auto updates :

  • Go to Playstore > Settings
  • Click on "Auto-update apps"
  • Select "Don't auto-update apps"

Now you are done. Your home screen recommendations are now gone.

3. Update Your Software:

One of the simplest ways to make Android TV faster is to make sure you are running the latest software version. Android TV receives periodic updates from Google, which can improve system performance and fix bugs. To check if your Android TV is up to date, go to Settings About System update. If an update is available, download and update it.

4. Free up Storage Space:

Another common reason why Android TV can slow down is insufficient storage space. As you install more apps and save more media files, your device’s internal storage will fill up quickly, leading to lag and slower performance. To free up storage space you can do the following tasks :

How to speed up slow Android TV:

  • Uninstall unused apps :
    • Go to Settings > Apps and
    • select the app you want to remove.
    • Then, select Uninstall.
  • Delete unnecessary files:
    • Go to Settings > Storage and
    • select the type of file you want to delete (e.g. downloads, photos, videos).
    • Then, select the files you want to remove and delete them.

5. Disable Unnecessary Apps

If you have too many apps running in the background, your Android TV can become sluggish. To improve performance, you can disable apps that you don’t use frequently. Follow the steps given below to disable apps on Android TV:

  • Go to Settings > Apps.
  • Select the app you want to disable.
  • Select Disable.

Note: Disabling some apps can affect the functionality of your Android TV, so it is best to disable only those apps that you don’t need or use often.

6. Clear Cache and Data :

Over time, apps can accumulate huge files and data, which can take up storage space and slow down your Android TV. To free up space and improve performance, you can clear the cache and data of individual apps or all apps at once. To clear cache and data in Android TV apps :

  • Go to Settings > Apps.
  • Select the app you want to clear cache or data for.
  • Select Clear cache or Clear data.

Note: Clearing data will remove all user data associated with the app, including login credentials, settings, and other preferences.
